3 Coping skills for millennial women experiencing anxiety

Anxiety is a normal part of life. Yet, it can cause you distress and interfere with everyday life. There are so many things that can cause you stress, like work, school, relationships, friendships, family, money, health issues, and social events.

Anxiety is often a response to an event where there is an uncertain outcome. That uncertainty can lead to an increased heart rate, feeling irritable, exhaustion, or having a noisy mind - going from one thought to the next.

So, how do you deal with all this stress and worry? Everyone deals with things differently, but here are three coping skills to try.

1. Take a break.

Stepping back from your worries can allow you to distract from your anxious thoughts to focus on your body and quiet your mind. Here are some things that you can do to distract yourself and take a break:

  1. Breathing Exercise: breathe in slowly through the nose, hold for several seconds, breathe out slowly through your mouth, and repeat a few times.

  2. Meditation: follow a guided meditation on YouTube.

  3. Grounding Exercise: look around your surroundings and name one thing you can see, hear, taste, touch, and smell.

  4. Shaking: give your whole body a shake, shake off that anxiety.

  5. Entertainment: watch your favorite TV show or read your favorite book, or one that you’ve been meaning to check out.

  6. Progressive Muscle Relaxation: tighten all your muscles and then release them, and feel the stress leave your muscles.

2. Move your body.

Moving your body can boost your mood and calm your body. Moving your body can look like:

  1. Walk

  2. Run

  3. Dance

  4. Yoga

  5. Bike

  6. Swim

3. Socialize with a friend, family member, or pet.

Don’t let your worries isolate you from others. It can feel great to share how you are feeling with others and let them know how they can help. Even if you don’t feel like talking, it can feel great just to spend time with those that you care about. This can bring a sense of togetherness and decrease loneliness. Here are some activities that you can do with others:

  1. Make each other laugh.

  2. Share a favorite memory.

  3. Watch a movie together.

  4. Go out to eat.

  5. Go on a walk.

  6. Cuddle your pet.
